For much of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max are imprisoned within a psychic prison forged from the recollections of Henry Creel. Their quest for an escape route in the pivotal sixth episode forces them to relive a life-altering moment from Henry's childhood—a moment that could contain the means to overcome him permanently.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Tunnel

After locating Max in the psychic realm known as Camazotz, Max reveals she is sheltering in a cave that Henry strangely fears. By leaving the lens cap on a viewing device pilfered from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the true terror lies outside of the cave. When she lines up her view through the cap, she and Max tumble into a deep mine shaft.

In this place, they observe a Henry as a boy come across an injured and paranoid man. As the boy offers aid, the man reacts violently, wounding the boy in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly asks tearfully. The answer is affirmative, but the event went deeper than a fight for life.

Like many elements in volume 2, the significance of the events in the tunnel was first explored the theatrical production the prequel play.

The Philadelphia Experiment and Stolen Research

This backstory explains the 1943 event, which allegedly sent a warship into a plane later called the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the lone returnee was the ship's commander, who came back in a vegetative state with an altered blood type.

That survivor's offspring, Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this dimensional breach in Nevada. However, a treacherous employee took experimental components to hand over to the Soviets, who were eager to begin their version of the tests. That traitor in the cavern is that employee.

The Briefcase's Contents

Given what is understood of his research, the briefcase almost certainly contained samples of the altered blood. At that moment, Henry is bleeding from his hand. It's probable he was infected upon opening the case, causing the development of his psychic abilities—traits he would inadvertently transfer to the test subjects under Brenner's care.

Alternatively, the case could have held exotic matter that eventually found its way to the Hawkins lab, where it acts to anchor the parallel world. The stage play explains that young Henry was transported in the Abyss, returning 12 hours later as a different person. Throughout the play, he battles the whispers of a sinister presence, similar to how Will was possessed by the entity in an earlier season.

A Weaponized Emotion

The reason Henry avoids the cave linked to that memory shows how deeply scarring the incident was for him. Even as he orchestrates the Hive Mind and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche lingers. The villain weaponizes terror, and the show is setting up a final confrontation between him and Will, who has overcome his greatest terrors to become stronger.

This journey has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. Crucially, Will now is aware of what his enemy truly fears, and this may grant a critical advantage in the ultimate battle that awaits.
