The Tottenham defender scored twice as Tottenham extended their unbeaten run in away games in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to put their strong form at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the scores a short while after Van de Ven's opener, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a handful of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent saves to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, advising the match official to review the goal on the screen and the official decided that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates the manager's side up to third in the division, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and sit six points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in duties at each end of the field

After a uninspiring weekday performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a only two shots on target, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defensive duties, partnering well with Kevin Danso as the pair handled superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have worn off slightly and supporters flocked to the exits after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a major concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of recognised centre-forwards - had netted just one league goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to add to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, even with having space and opportunity to readjust for a simpler shot that would have challenged the keeper.

The substitute, too, was unable to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly delivered dangerous balls into the Tottenham box.
