The Himalayan nation's Political Landscape Sees Major Partnership Forged Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Discussions Taking Place

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with several major political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
