The Game UN:Me: A Cerebral Thriller That Blends Silent Hill and Among Us Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several intriguing future games, but one in particular has seized attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure seems to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive experience where a young woman containing multiple personalities inside her must escape from a maze of the psyche," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Within her reside four separate personas, each with unique anxieties and motivations. These entities can take over at will, releasing their deep-seated phobias upon her suddenly.
Judging by revealed footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a creepy medical facility, while other scenes depict the protagonist navigating a abandoned chapel.
A World of Individual Horror
"What makes you fearful of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Things that appear minor to other people can activate something primal within us. This game delves into that concept — anxieties that are unique to every individual."
The central mechanic revolves around managing whichever soul surfaces at any given time. However, these souls will change involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's fears become exaggerated and assault the girl one after another. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Decision
At first glance, UN:Me displays noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by nurses who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide smiles. Figures in the waiting room have enormous blooms growing from their necks should be. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four personas claims that the physical form belongs to them," notes a developer. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."
Once players believes a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. But, because each soul can deceive or hide the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The last one remaining might be a fake. Either way, your choices are final."
UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed launch window, but it is available to follow on platforms.
