Powerful Gales Cause Numerous Homes Without Power in the Island Nation

Storm damage in New Zealand
Residents encouraged to stay indoors as strong winds batter the country.

Severe winds hitting speeds of as high as 155km/h (96mph) have resulted in around 90,000 homes without power and led authorities to call off more than 100 air travel services, as reported by local media.

These gusts are influencing the whole South Island and southern parts of the northern region, according to the country's meteorological service.

Officials in New Zealand have issued infrequent red wind warnings - the highest alert level - in central regions encompassing Wellington and Canterbury.

People have been urged to remain inside, avoid travel, and make arrangements for additional utility disruptions.

Extensive Destruction and Crisis Response

The electricity loss appears to be affecting households predominantly in the South Island, though officials report that energy was being slowly brought back.

Domestic outlets have stated that in certain areas homes have lost their roofs, while power lines and trees have been brought down by the gusts.

Within the capital, a man was fatally injured after being impacted by a wooden fragment at a popular trail walking spot on Tuesday.

Also in the capital, a female was pushed toward oncoming traffic on a thoroughfare by a powerful blast, in a incident that was filmed in a viral dashcam video.

Aircraft services to and from the urban area have been suspended due to the winds, and certain highways and community centers are not operating.

Simultaneously authorities in Canterbury have issued a state of emergency, to support recovery activities.

Strike Action During Harsh Weather

The powerful gales on this day coincide with tens of thousands of educators, medical professionals and government employees are participating in what has been called a "mega strike", demanding higher wages and enhanced employment terms.

However the intense climate has pressured them to modify some of their plans, with some outdoor rallies moved indoors or called off.

Comparable winds are affecting the neighboring country, bringing a heatwave to the remote areas.

Authorities have declared flame prohibitions for apprehension regarding forest fires.
