Patients Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who come off popular slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People buying such medications should be cognizant of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a reversion to original mass within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through dieting generally experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

Health authorities advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Users who have come off the medication report a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It was like something that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," described a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
