New England Warming Faster Than Most Places on Earth, Study Finds.
The American area known for its historical past, sweet syrup and frigid, snow-covered winters is experiencing a dramatic change. A recent study finds that New England is warming more quickly than nearly any other place on the planet.
Unprecedented Pace of Transformation
The speed of warming in New England makes it the most rapidly warming region of the contiguous United States, as per the research. The rate of its temperature rise has apparently increased significantly in the past five years.
"The temperature is not only rising, it's accelerating," explained a primary researcher on the study. "It's really accelerated in recent years, which surprised me. Our regional climate is moving in a new direction, after being relatively stable for thousands of years."
The analysis places the north-eastern US among the fastest-warming areas in the world, together with the polar region and parts of Europe and China. "New England is now moving toward being like the American South," the scientist added.
Study Approach and Results
For the study, researchers examined three datasets on day and night temperatures and snowpack dating back to 1900. The review covered the six states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.
They found that New England has warmed by an mean of 2.5°C (4.5°F) from 1900 to 2024. This far exceeds the worldwide mean, with the planet warming by around 1.3 degrees Celsius in the comparable timeframe.
"That is very fast heating, which is concerning," commented the study author.
Key Climate Patterns
- Nighttime temperatures are rising more quickly than daytime temperatures.
- Winters are warming at double the speed of other seasons.

Marine Factors and the "Heat Battery"
A primary cause for this unusual build-up of heat may be shifts in the Atlantic Ocean. The global seas are taking in more than 90% of the excess heat captured by greenhouse gases.
In the north Atlantic, an increase of cold, fresh water from Greenland’s melting glaciers is slowing down the Gulf Stream. This is pushing warmer water into the Gulf of Maine, concentrating heat along the coastline that is then carried inland by prevailing winds.
"The excess heat from climate change is being stored in the oceans like a massive storage unit," said the researcher. "This is now being discharged into the atmosphere and New England is a receiver of that heat."
Impacts on Culture and Weather
Once seen as a mild climate haven, New England has suffered severe weather shocks in the past decade, including devastating flooding and extended dry spells.
The increasing temperatures poses a threat to cherished aspects of regional life:
- Syrup production is facing challenges by changing climate conditions.
- Winter sports are disrupted; an ice hockey tournament on Vermont and New Hampshire lakes has been called off or relocated repeatedly due to unsafe ice conditions.
- Ski resorts have faced difficulties because of inadequate snowfall.
"I reside just outside Boston and when I arrived in the 1990s I used to skate on the ponds regularly," recalled the researcher. "That tradition has pretty much vanished from large parts of the southern part of the region."
