A uniquely yellow-colored apartment block visible behind helped us locate the video.

We are analyzing video footage and photographs circulated earlier today that purport to show the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials say killed a senior soldier in Moscow.

Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed to his wounds. An investigation is under way.

The initial step to check the location of where the pictures were from relied on social media reports saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.

Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building captured in the footage.

Locating additional buildings, streetlights and the street layout confirmed the exact location the pictures were taken.

Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the visuals had not undergone manipulated.
