The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
