RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several entry passages providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their valour," he commented. "Including them were a great many British personnel on duty over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, shows how British military are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN says Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
