Celebratory Displays along with a Cheer to Life: Israeli Citizens Rejoice at Deal Bringing Back Captives
The declaration regarding a deal projected to lead to the freeing captives detained in the Gaza Strip for over 24 months has caused joy and relief throughout Israel.
A group that has advocated for the return of Israeli captives held in Gaza voiced “deep appreciation” for what it termed an “historic breakthrough”.
The deal—which still must be approved by the Israeli war cabinet—will see the return of 20 living hostages as well as the remains of 28 dead hostages in return for 250 Palestinian detainees imprisoned for life in Israeli jails plus 1,700 individuals from Gaza.
So far, 148 captives have come back—largely through earlier truce agreements—51 bodies have been recovered and eight hostages have been rescued.
Celebratory Moments at Hostages Square
Jubilant scenes took place in Hostages’ Square located in Tel Aviv with crowds of individuals assembled ahead of the agreement’s signing.
A crowd started applauding and dancing under US and Israeli flags—one woman displaying a sign saying: “We adore Trump.”
“This is a wondrous day,” the woman said.
Another, 50-year-old Yael, wept while observing the crowd dancing.
“I am thrilled—it’s such a relief,” she stated. “We need to see their return home to their loved ones.”

Relatives Rejoice with Fireworks
The mother and sister of Israeli hostage Matan Zangauker lit fireworks in celebration of the announcement that he would be returned home.
“They are returning!... Matan is on his way home!” Einav Zangauker exclaimed as she held her child.
Viki Cohen, the parent of captive Israeli Nimrod Cohen, posted on social media: “My son, you are returning home.”
The delight was palpable throughout the avenues of Tel Aviv following the news.
Freed Hostages Say Prayers and Raise Glasses
Former British-Israeli hostage Emily Damari rejoiced with another freed hostage Romi Gonen, uttering blessings of thankfulness, then cheering “L’chaim”, which means “to life”. She has been campaigning for the release of her companions, twins Gali and Ziv Berman.
Their sibling Liran Berman wrote: “My dear Gali and Ziv, I adore you. You are coming back.”
The cousin of Gil Dickman Carmel Gat was captured in October 2023, with her remains recovered from a tunnel in Gaza almost a year later. He has participated with other captives’ relatives in pushing for a deal which ensures the return of all those still being held in Gaza.
“I hardly believe this is actually happening. We have waited for so long and here it is,” he expressed.
He stated he felt “shattered” that his cousin will not be among those coming back home yet felt “glowing with joy” for the relatives of the hostages who are finally returning.
Eitan Horn was taken from Nir Oz kibbutz in Israel’s south together with his sibling.
Guarded Hope from Relatives
Dalia Cusnir, whose brother-in-law Eitan Horn remains captive in Gaza, said she experienced like she was living “a dream state”.
“We’re more than grateful to President Trump and all he has done on our behalf. It seems that this could be the start of the conclusion of this ordeal, and hugging Eitan seems nearer than ever,” she said.
But she cautioned that it remained too early to rejoice.
“Until the last hostage returns, we’re not opening the champagne. We’re going to keep fighting... until it’s over,” she affirmed.
“Numerous events might occur until the last moment so this is why we are extremely cautious. We simply wish to thank everyone who was involved in the work and ensure this deal is finalized... We shall rejoice only when we have the last hostage back home.”
Eitan was captured from Nir Oz kibbutz in southern Israel along with his brother Iair, who was freed from detainment in a ceasefire deal earlier in the year.
